From superheroes in the media, majority of most notable superheroes are Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain America and Wolverine, the common denominator is that all these heroes I mentioned are not of color, but Creed director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios changed the game when they brought Black Panther to the silver screen following the release of other comic properties such as Luke Cage (get ready for season 2 dropping on Netflix on Friday, June 22nd) and also DC's/CW Black Lightening which is making hits as well with audiences.

What was my Sunday like @TWComicon? I have seen heroes, villains, cosplay gallore, the Batmobile and wrestling legend Jim Hacksaw Dugan!

My fourth Comicon was this Sunday as myself and my brother from another mother, #MrOW Cool V invaded the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Showing our email and registering with check-in we collected our press passes with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy's Baby Groot (definitely go see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, you will love it---SEE THE REVIEW HERE AT IGN) and we proceeded to take pics of cosplayers and check out spectacular artists and writers both local and international. During my first and second time at Tidewater Comicon, I would normally go on Saturdays but this was the first time I went on a Sunday. I have to say that going either on Saturdays or Sundays are both great days to go.



With my two previous Tidewater Comicon and one Hampton Comicon visits, a lot of cosplayers dressed up as either Harley Quinn, Spiderman or Deadpool. Thanks to the success of Fox and Marvel's Deadpool. SEE: JOSH BROSLIN CAST TO PLAY CABLE IN DEADPOOL 2. The Suicide Movie version of Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie got more love over the traditional Batman: The Animated Series' Harley. Whether or not fans are anticipating Marvel and Sony's Spiderman: Homecoming. Spidey cosplayers are always bound to be seen at any Virginia Comicon. Also you had very unique cosplayer's spins on costumes like Iron Deadpool, American Spider, Cosmic Male Spider Gwen (or maybe I should call him Spider-Rasta).





Celebrity guests featured the original 90's TV The Flash and playing Jay Garrick "Flash" on CW's The Flash- John Wesley Shipp & Jesse Quick played by Violet Beane, Jason Mewes, Wolverine and X-Men writer Chris Claremont, Neal Adams, co-creator of the New Mutants: Bob McCleod, artist Jae Lee, comedian Dana Snyder, Robert Venditti, Larry Stroman, wrestling legend Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and more.







It was an awesome event, I thank Tidewater Comicon for having us as attendees and giving us press passes. I thank all the cosplays that let us take pics and the artists as well especially big shouts to our boy Jabaar Brown and Eric M. Cooper and also Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Movie Madness! What movies you should check out and Why!

It's Must See March! Tomorrow, the much anticipated sequel to the Wolverine and star Hugh Jackman's last turn as Wolverine in the X-Men movie franchise, Logan is a story where in 2029 where no more mutants have been born and Logan formerly Wolverine is the last X-Man alive taking care of an aged and weakened Professor X (Patrick Stewart reprises his notable role) finds himself back out retirement when a cyborg mutant hunting squad (probably the Reavers- a long time enemy of the X-Men in the comics) on the hunt for a mysterious young mutant girl who is need of Logan and Prof X's help and protection.



Taking from the popular Old Man Logan Marvel storyline, director James Manigold was limited what Marvel Comics characters could be involved has done a masterfully good job of crafting a story that is Wolverine and in the world of the X-Men film franchise. This movie takes a new direction as it is more of an Noir-Western movie instead of a superhero movie. Young child actress Daphne Keen makes an awesome X23 and fans like myself are hopeful that maybe this could be a passing of the baton as X23 could maybe appear in other X-Men films (X-Men: Supernova is said to be in production which is a follow up to X-Men: Apocalypse) Rotten Tomatoes have gave Logan a favorable review in 93 percentile (SEE ROTTEN TOMATOES REVIEW HERE), Hollywood Reporter gave the movie its blessing (CHECK THEM OUT AS WELL) and IGN has gave the movie a 9.7 out of 10 (CHECK IT OUT HERE).

Keanu Reeves is back with a vengeance in John Wick 2 where we find him with his new no named dog who continues his mission of getting back his car from Russian mobsters. I guess Mr. Wick is a man of principle, you don't steal John Wick's car, shoot up his home and kill his dog which his departed wife who died of cancer had gifted to him as a last gift to him. Apparently being an retired hitman, the game won't let him go which the story takes him to Rome and back. The movie also features fellow Matrix trilogy movie alumni Lawrence Fishburne and Common also tries to steal the show from Mr. Wick. The movie is a must see for action junkies. Beware it does get gory as John Wick goes literally on a massive one man killing spree against the world. The story is not the best. But much like a lot of the Transformer movies and maybe GI Joe movies as well, John Wick: Chapter 2 is for action junkies. More blood than a Mortal Kombat game so be prepared.



Hidden Figures is the untold story about three Black women living in my hometown of Hampton, Virginia who became very instrumental in NASA during the space race of trying to beat the Russians. This movie is historically important and prior to this movie I was never taught about Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. The movie is scored by legendary Virginia Beach producer and artist, Pharrell Williams. Johnson, Vaughn and Jackson endured racism and sexism while working at NASA and these women were very intelligent making far better calculations than computers could do during that time period in the 50s. This movie is still getting a lot of plays in the theaters and if you are lucky you may be able to find it on Facebook Live but you didn't get that from us. We would like to plea the fifth. This is definitely a great movie to take the family to and the kids as well because prior to the release and numerous book signings of the book and this movie was not known and we here at Rated Next would sincerely hope that some teachers will choose to teach about who and how great Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson were and teach their students that if these three women became so good in math they were human computers and made big contributions to NASA then anything is possible. The movie stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, Janelle Monae makes her acting debut as Mary Jackson, and Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughn, Kirsten Dundst and Kevin Costner. Collide is a heist with a love story twist. If you loved movies like Speed and Gone in 60 Seconds then this movie is for you. To pay for his girlfriend's (Felicity Jones) medical emergency while abroad, a desperate man (Nicholas Hoult) hatches a scheme to pull off a drug heist for an eccentric gangster (Anthony Hopkins). After a failed attempt, he must now race across Europe and against time to save the life of the woman he loves.



We can all admit that we grew up with Legos. But this generation has seen several varieties of Lego toys and even cartoons and movies featuring Legos such as Legos Nexo Knights, Lego Avengers, Legos Justices League and even previously The Lego Movie. This year we get Lego Batman movie featuring voice talents such as Will Arnett as Batman, Zach Galiafianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Billy Dee Williams, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Zoe Kravitz and more (SEE THE FULL CAST HERE). This movie is definitely for the kids and kids at heart. Batman defends Gotham City and as usual with anything related to Batman against the likes of his villains such as the Joker, Catwoman, Two Face and his usual Rogues gallery and learning how to work with his sidekicks Robin voice by Jonah Hill and Batgirl voiced by Rosario Dawson. This Lego Batman movie has drawn a lot of campy comparisons to the Adam West Batman TV series. Please don't do the Battusi dance though lol.



X-Men franchise James McAvoy plays Kevin who has multiple personality disorder with 23 distinct different personalities abducts three teenage girls in this psychological horror thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those personalites contained within him - as well as everyone around him - as the walls between his mental compartments shatter apart. This film will keep on the edge of your seat.



In the movie Sleepless, Jamie Foxx plays an undercover cop Las Vegas police officer Vincent Downs, who is caught in a high stakes web of corrupt cops and the mob-controlled casino underground. When a heist goes wrong, a crew of homicidal gangsters kidnaps Downs’ teenage son. In one sleepless night he will have to rescue his son, evade an internal affairs investigation and bring the kidnappers to justice. This movie features back to back action and we definitely think Jamie will deserve an award for this movie. One of his finest performances. Also Michelle Monaghan stars as Jamie Foxx character's wife and T.I. has a role in the movie too. But I don't want to give it away for you so make sure you check it out.

What are your thoughts of diversity in @Marvel and @DCComics?

Recently Black superheros have been taking the stage front and center from Marvel's Netflix series Luke Cage, to the Black Panther making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War, characters created by Brian Michael Bendis like Ultimate Spider-man: Miguel Morales and Iron Heart (Riri Williams- Tony Stark's Iron Man protege), and most recently CW's Kid Flash from the Flash TV series Wally West.

The first three Black superheroes were most notably Luke Cage, Black Panther and Storm who made her debut in Giant Sized X-Men #1 in Marvel Comics and then also DC introduced their superheroes such as Black Lightening, Green Lantern Jon Stewart, Cyborg, Icon and others. Recently, Marvel has been more adventurous in shaking up the status quo of their traditional characters like a time making Sam Wilson "The Falcon" as the primary Captain America, a female Thor (longtime on and off Thor love interest Jane Foster), an Asian-Korean Hulk (one of the Incredible Hulk's buddies Amadeus Cho who is also one of Marvel's smart teen geniuses), an mixed Black and Latino Spiderman, and recently a brilliant 15 year old Black female Riri Williams as a female Iron Man known as Iron-Heart. Even Iron Man's love interest and assistant Pepper Potts has also donned some Iron Man armor. Also, even to DC Comic's credit they did also make Jimmy Olson on the CBS now CW's Supergirl to a Black man James Olson who is still Superman's best bud and also has stepped his role in the latest season of Supergirl. No spoilers so I do encourage you to check out and see about all these characters.



Coincedentally, I wasn't the only person to come up with this top as YouTube channels Comics Explained and Comicstorian have also did videos on this subject and stating their stances on this subject. Why some people may feel upset that some traditional heroes are being changed but my opinion is this is 2017 and diversity is welcomed. Other ethnicities need their heroes and heroines. For instance, not only does Marvel still have Peter Parker webslinging as Spiderman but New York is big enough to have two men- one Black and one White both equally wear the mantle of Spiderman and both have membership on the Avengers. Heroes such as Steel, Duke Thomas and Batwing don't replace superheros such as Superman, any of the previous and current Robins and Batman but they have more than enough room in the comics to work alongside them. So, my opinion is it is not so much about replacing and changing the status quo but letting us have our own heroes. There was a point in time where we didn't have this much diversity. Yes, we had few heroes such as Luke Cage, Black Panther, Storm, Black Lightning, Icon, Blade and Falcon.

Marvel's television division included diversity with Mack, Melinda May and Agent Triplett in their Marvel's Agents of Shield and female Inhuman SHIELD agent and fan favorite Sky aka Daisy Johnson. Also, CW's the Flash and Arrow introduced characters such as Wally West and Iris West who instead of being white are Black on the TV show, Mr. Terrific on Team Arrow, Firestorm, Hawkgirl and Vixen. Marvel's partnership with Netflix brought us Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. The Luke Cage series dealt with the current issues of racism and police brutality. As even rapper Method Man cameos in the series and trades hoodies with the one Luke was wearing shot up with holes as a reference to the killing of Trayvon Martin. So, overall in my opinion diversity in comic books is a welcome change in my opinion.
